The fossiliferous place- Cernavoda
It is a protected area of national interest which corresponds to IUCN IIIrd cathegory (paleontologic type natural reservation), situated on the administrative territory of Cernavoda town. The natural area is found in Dobrogea Plateau, in the central- western extremity of Constanta county, on Danube’s right margin. The national reservation was declared protected area by the Law no. 5 from the 6th of March 2000 (regarding the approval of the Establishment plan of the national territory- IIIrd Section- protected areas) and is extended on a surface of 3 hectares.Within the perimeter of the fossiliferous place- Cernavoda, it is situated also an abruption (discovered versant) made from calcareous conglomerates, with an important content of fossiliferous fauna (coral, sea slugs, tube- shells, Brachiopoda) referring to the geological period of the inferior Cretaceous. The conservator of the fossiliferous place- Cernavoda is the Forests’ National Direction- Romsilva SA.
The fossiliferous place- Aliman
Is a fossiliferous type monument of nature, on a surface of 11,13 ha, nearby Aliman town, south from Sarpul lake, with access from Ion Corvin – Aliman.
The fossiliferous point- Aliman is shown as an abrupt wall, which from the geological point of view is made of an alternance of limestones which belong to the inferior Cretaceous. The richness in fossil remainings of the limestones has a special scientific importance, both nationally and internationally, because it represents one of the few places from the country where it can be continuously followed a stratigraphic sequence of the inferior Cretaceous in the typical south- mediteranean facies. The extremely high frecquence of the fossil remainings as well as their high-rate conservation, gives to this point special qualities, representing an authentic paleontologic museum in open air.
The Neo-Jurassic reef from Topalu
West from Atarnati forest, on a small horn of the Danube, Veriga, extends the Neo-Jurassic reef from Topalu.
With a complex with coral reefs, considered as being neo-jurassic, the reservation shows the clearest section of coral reefs formations throughout the entire Romanian territory. With a real mixt value, the reservation awakens the interest of many specialists from the country and abroad, as well as of the tourists willing to see unique structures in Europe, of a great scientific interest. The limestones with coral reef characteristics from this reservation contain one of the richest associations of Jurassic corals from the country. This complex is made of a sequencing of limestones, differentiated on layers. The structure of the current massive limestones with coral reef characteristics is alike the one of the reefs developed in the regions in front of the Alps, at the border of the Hercynian epi-continental platform, as well as the Stramberg type ones from Slavonia.
South- west from Rasova town, north from Vlahii town, Aliman township extends on a length of 517 ha. The protected area is boardable on agrarian roads which disbranch from Ion Corvin C.R.. Vederoasa lake is characterized by the existence of some ascensional springs with mud, with origin in the limestones from the basis of the cliff and which supply underground the lake’s waters. Over 80% of the surface of the lake is covered with cane, which makes it an environment proper for the birds. Vederoasa lake or Vederoasa everglade is a comfort and hibernation place for many species of migratory aquatic birds, especially species of ducks and geese, but also a nestle place for the birds species, most of them protected.
